“When We Bow Down Our Heads” Art Installation | Sep. 26 – Oct. 24
Windscape Brooklyn is pleased to present a sound and video work for the immersive theater, the Storybox, created by John Roach.
Breezes, gusts and gales offer a visceral experience of climate as they batter, tickle and whistle their way through our human imagination. Wind is a central feature of our myths and our histories. It has shaped our lives for millennia and our earth for eons. Roach’s work, “When We Bow Down Our Heads,” celebrates the resonance of wind and its promiscuous and borderless nature with a quadraphonic soundscape that envelops the listener. It combines 10 years of spatialized field recordings, performances by Wolf Robert Stratmann (double bass) and Inbal Hever (voice), and is punctuated by interviews with climate scientist Joonsuk Kang, artist Raven Chacon, and illustrator Lauren Redniss.
Accompanying the sound is a work created for WindScape Brooklyn’s massive Storybox video wall which portrays a shifting landscape of windswept grasses, trees and turbines along with a scrolling graphic score that Roach created to guide the musicians who improvised with his soundscape.
Showings of this incredible installation will kick off at the end of Climate Week on September 26 and run through October 24.
During that window, showings will run during WindScape Brooklyn’s Public Open Hours:
Saturdays 1:00-2:00 PM & 3:00-4:00 PM.

Wide Load on the Road Storytime! | September 12
Join us at WindScape Brooklyn for a special family storytime!
New York Times bestselling author and illustrator, Stephen Savage, will read his newest book “Wide Load on the Road,”— the tale of a not so little wind turbine blade, who travels over land and sea to reach a wind farm and send electricity to the world.
After a group reading of this lovely new book, we will enjoy turbine coloring and crafts, an on-the-go bookstore curtesy of Lofty Pigeon Books, and a special wind turbine exhibit created by 6-year-old wind turbine enthusiast, Alfonso.
“I love wind turbines because they make energy when the wind blows. I’ve been watching them on TV, and they are my favorite! I think they are so cool, and that’s why I really love making wind turbines,” says Alfonso.
Register below for free and join us for a morning that will blow you away and lift learning off the page, into the world around us.
Please note, this event is recommended for ages 3-6 years, but there is something fun for all ages! All children must be supervised by an adult, and adult participation will be required during the entire event. When registering, please submit a separate registration for ALL participants in your group, adults and children alike. Tickets are limited!
